Compressed air filters remove the different contaminants present in the air. These contaminants appear in solid, liquid or vapor form. For every type of contaminant, there exists a specific compressed air filter.

Compressed air carries many contaminants which attack any compressed air system. The compressed air filter is a must!

Contaminants appear in 3 different forms:

Liquid contaminants

Mainly condensed water and oil in pipelines. Liquid water is removed by a centrifugal separator, not with a filter. Oil in fine mist form is removed by coalescing filters and automatic drains.

Solid contaminants

These are aspirated by the compressor (e.g. dust, dirt, pollen) or produced by the compression and distribution system itself (e.g. metallic particles, rust, limescale).

Contaminants in vapor state

Caused by pollution in the ambient air or by chemical reactions in the compression cycle. Hydrocarbon vapors are filtered with activated carbon. Contaminants in vapor state are treated by adsorption or catalysis.

Foire aux questions

In compressed air circuits, only a dryer (by refrigeration or by adsorption depending on the desired performance) is able to eliminate any risk of condensation in the lines. Filters, if fitted with an automatic drain, can only remove water in liquid form where they are installed. At the outlet of the filter, the compressed air remains 100% saturated with humidity. The filters therefore do not avoid the subsequent condensation caused by the cooling of the compressed air when traveling in pipes.
